Linux Compatibility List: Introduction

As a lot of us have found out the hard way a lot of Hardware is not compatible with Linux without drivers (e.g. Winmodems etc). So we have to be carefull when buying new HW to make sure its compatible with our system. This is easy to do when you are in front of your computer and can search the web for information but what about when you are at a computer shop/show and see this amazing deal but don't know if it would work on your computer? I faced this problem many times and got tired of it. So I started thinking: "Is there any way to avoid this problem?"

Then I realized I carry my Palm m505 with me everywhere I go so if I could get a list of compatible HW/SW converted to a Palm DB format I would be home free. I looked at many formats and finally decided on iSilo. The main advantage of this format is that it has a very high text compression, and secondly it has a commandline version available for Linux.

The current file is was created on 15-04-2004 (dd-mm-yyyy) using information from http://www.linuxcompatible.org/. Please visit the above website for more updated infomation on Linux compatible Hardware/Software. The pdb file is recreated with the latest information on every 1st and 15th of the month. How much new information is there in the file depends on how often linuxcompatible.org updates its information. :)

The file is compressed to save space. To unpack it on Unix/linux, do either of these:

tar xzvf FILENAME.tar.gz
zcat FILENAME.tar.gz | tar xvf -

There are also graphical front ends for Linux such as LinTar and Midnight Commander. Windows users need a program like Winzip. Macintosh users need to use Stuffit Expander.

If you would like to convert this file to other PDA formats, feel free to do so. If you need a copy of the scripts I use to create the pdb file feel free to Contact Me.

Hope you find this as useful as I do.
